Action. Life always seems to throw challenges at all of us and at the times we least expect them. Responding to what are often significant change to your life, your business or to your loved ones provides one of the greatest tests any of us will ever face. In such circumstances it is very important to attempt to keep perspective – but this is tough when you are in the middle of some form of crisis! What we all need to do is do the necessary research on the speedbumps you now face, then focus your efforts on determining the options available to create a new course of action, and then develop a plan that you can now put into action. This is not an easy process but to change results you must change your actions.

Forward. Most of us never take sufficient time to look forward and to assess the opportunities that, in all likelihood, lay ahead of us. If you manage your goals in this manner you will undoubtedly wake up one day to realize that you have made very little progress! Realizing your goals and building your future is a conscious effort of planning and execution. The challenge that most people and many businesses face is that they create too large a set of goals that immediately appear to discourage them from putting in the effort to make these happen. I would suggest that you develop a list of short term goals that are easily measured and managed and set to work in making those happen. Get successes and then develop additional plans to build on that foundation! What you want to be able to do is move into the future, look back, and go – yeah! – look at what I have done to be more successful.

Experts. When we are faced with certain challenges in our lives and in our businesses we need to look outside ourselves and identify experts in their fields who can provide the advice, information, and clarity that we feel we need in order to move ahead. These people can be in our community or in some far off place but the technologies and systems we use today allow us to access these opportunities. It is always said that the "shortest distance between two points is a straight line!" People who are experts in their field can help you find this straight line and save a great deal of time, money, and effort for you to invest in other ways in your life or business. Take stock this week and identify one area where this kind of help would give you a real competitive advantage. Find your shortest distance!

Family. At this time of year we need to sit back and remember why we set goals, why we build businesses, and why we work hard over the course of each year. The most important things in our lives are our family and our close friends. These are the folks who we love and who stand by us and help us in those times when we are challenged in any manner. They also share in our successes and provide encouragement and advice that is invaluable. Over the next couple of weeks take the time to tell these folks just how much you appreciate and respect their support. Make the most of Christmas and when you say Merry Christmas – it is from your heart!

Disruption. We often hear that we live in an “Age of Disruption”. Events that occur that are of such significance that they challenge us to modify our strategies and action plans. In the last year or so what with major hurricanes destroying vast areas of land, major wildfires in the US and Canada, and, yes, even political change can make it seem that we are in the midst of a much larger “storm” than usual. History shows that us that such events always occur and when we least expect them (wars, revolutions, historic political change, etc.) so we should not be surprised when these occur. The key is how we react to such events and whether or not we learn new ways to adapt to these challenges in the future. Take some time and assess how prepared are you and your business for such events!

Opportunities. If you look forward with optimism then you will always identify great opportunities. The future is always ahead of you and what you do with that is up to each one of us. I always recall the story that back about 1900 the head of the US Patent Office felt they should close the office as nothing more could be invented. Would he not be astounded at what has happened in the world from then to now - that was a future! We have to keep in mind that our futures are going to be a result of the generations that follow us. This is one reason that the education of our youth is so important. They help determine our futures! So look forward and create your future plan. You will be then be part of the solution and our future growth.

Act. Have you ever noticed how many words contain this little word? As per my search it totals 1165 words. You might say that this is a very powerful little word! Think about its implications - take one word and the following actions create so many possibilities. What are your possibilities if you take this little work and develop your "act" words? How will it change you and the way you approach what it is you do both personally and professionally? You can create activities, develop action plans, become an activist, and more significantly, actually make changes to our world! Take a few minutes as we approach Halloween and develop your "action" lists of the things you will do, when you will do them, and what the result will be for you and for us! Don't hesitate - just act!

Cooperation. How many of you have really looked at this word to identify the key action word contained within – “operation”! This is an action word and when we think about how we get things done it always takes an “operation” to make everything happen. When we work together towards a common goal it is this cooperation that makes the difference. Think back over the last several weeks and the response to storms and other significant events in our community and in our world; the common thread to create change is the simple fact of “many hands make light work” – so as you embark on a new week look hard to develop projects where cooperation will result in success!

Foresight. Do not confuse this with the Fortuneteller who suggests that they can see into your future and determine what that might be. Using foresight is the act of looking forward, taking care to assess all of the advantages and disadvantages of a particular course of action. Using this capability enhances the outcomes as you have studied the situation, assessed it from a number of perspectives, and then developed a course of action. When faced with obstacles and major decisions use your foresight to assist with the decision making process.

Progress. How do you define progress? It can take many forms but the key answer to me is that you develop a plan to make changes and to make things better for you and those around you. Developing a plan of action, measuring your progress, and taking further actions to continue towards your goals is what you do to achieve success. This then becomes a process that you follow to continue to make a difference.
