Disruption. We often hear that we live in an “Age of Disruption”. Events that occur that are of such significance that they challenge us to modify our strategies and action plans. In the last year or so what with major hurricanes destroying vast areas of land, major wildfires in the US and Canada, and, yes, even political change can make it seem that we are in the midst of a much larger “storm” than usual. History shows that us that such events always occur and when we least expect them (wars, revolutions, historic political change, etc.) so we should not be surprised when these occur. The key is how we react to such events and whether or not we learn new ways to adapt to these challenges in the future. Take some time and assess how prepared are you and your business for such events!

Opportunities. If you look forward with optimism then you will always identify great opportunities. The future is always ahead of you and what you do with that is up to each one of us. I always recall the story that back about 1900 the head of the US Patent Office felt they should close the office as nothing more could be invented. Would he not be astounded at what has happened in the world from then to now - that was a future! We have to keep in mind that our futures are going to be a result of the generations that follow us. This is one reason that the education of our youth is so important. They help determine our futures! So look forward and create your future plan. You will be then be part of the solution and our future growth.

Act. Have you ever noticed how many words contain this little word? As per my search it totals 1165 words. You might say that this is a very powerful little word! Think about its implications - take one word and the following actions create so many possibilities. What are your possibilities if you take this little work and develop your "act" words? How will it change you and the way you approach what it is you do both personally and professionally? You can create activities, develop action plans, become an activist, and more significantly, actually make changes to our world! Take a few minutes as we approach Halloween and develop your "action" lists of the things you will do, when you will do them, and what the result will be for you and for us! Don't hesitate - just act!

Cooperation. How many of you have really looked at this word to identify the key action word contained within – “operation”! This is an action word and when we think about how we get things done it always takes an “operation” to make everything happen. When we work together towards a common goal it is this cooperation that makes the difference. Think back over the last several weeks and the response to storms and other significant events in our community and in our world; the common thread to create change is the simple fact of “many hands make light work” – so as you embark on a new week look hard to develop projects where cooperation will result in success!

Foresight. Do not confuse this with the Fortuneteller who suggests that they can see into your future and determine what that might be. Using foresight is the act of looking forward, taking care to assess all of the advantages and disadvantages of a particular course of action. Using this capability enhances the outcomes as you have studied the situation, assessed it from a number of perspectives, and then developed a course of action. When faced with obstacles and major decisions use your foresight to assist with the decision making process.

Progress. How do you define progress? It can take many forms but the key answer to me is that you develop a plan to make changes and to make things better for you and those around you. Developing a plan of action, measuring your progress, and taking further actions to continue towards your goals is what you do to achieve success. This then becomes a process that you follow to continue to make a difference.

What resists. Persists. I heard this for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It got me to thinking – if we resist something such as a change in our life or business, a new product or service that might help us, or anything "just because" – then whatever the situation is it will stay the same and not change. You have to work to change the word – from "persists" to "persistence" – that is, you must actively work to change the circumstance so that you move forward and make things happen. Standing still is not the answer!

Service. All of us experience service as we move through each day. What we often overlook is the fact that each of you are experiencing two services! The first one is what you receive and the most significant one is the one you give! There is a symmetry to many things in our lives and what you give is often much more important than what you receive. I experienced two gifts yesterday – the first was awakening with a dreadful toothache and sending a note to my Dentist to see about an appointment Monday. To my surprise I got a call and was asked to come to her office where she provided treatment that has left me much more comfortable this morning. The second was filling my car with gas - the attendant was so focused on eating potato chips that they did not speak nor pay much attention to the task at hand. Two quite different versions of service. For each of us our goal should be to provide better service than we receive – as you go through August looking toward a new school and business year in September assess what you can do to elevate your services to all!
